Altermagnetism wins physicists a major prize

So: three physicists behind the discovery of altermagnetism have won the 2026 Europhysics Prize. Their work established a third form of collinear magnetism, joining ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism after more than a century with just those two categories. Altermagnets have no net magnetization like antiferromagnets, yet their electrons can show properties associated with ferromagnets. And here's the exciting part: this combination could help enable faster spintronic devices and open new avenues in quantum materials and fundamental physics.
