Physicists uncover a fractional fermi sea

Now, here's a fascinating twist: physicists have identified a way to drive ultracold cesium atoms into an unusual state called a fractional Fermi sea. By repeatedly switching their interactions from strong repulsion to strong attraction, the atoms can become highly excited without losing their underlying order. The theoretical work, published in Physical Review Letters, suggests this state follows a modified rule for filling quantum energy levels and carries telltale patterns such as Friedel oscillations. That gives researchers a new, carefully controlled route to explore quantum matter far from equilibrium.
