Euclid, the ESA space telescope designed to study dark matter and dark energy, has made a delightful discovery along the way: a previously unknown comet more than 807 million miles from Earth. An object-detection program spotted the comet streaking across several images, and astronomers recognized its fuzzy cloud of dust and gas. Now known as C/2026 S1 (Euclid), the comet follows a multi-thousand-year orbit that takes it above the planets' orbital plane. And here's the thing: Euclid's survey is designed to avoid comet-rich regions, making this cosmic find a happy surprise.
