Roman sarcophagus at Westminster Abbey held a medieval monk

A Roman sarcophagus at Westminster Abbey, made in the 4th century, appears to have been reused about 700 years later for a medieval monk. New stonework analysis and skeletal dating narrow the likely occupants to abbots Aelfwig, who died around 1020, or Wulnoth, who died in 1049. The man’s remains suggest he was 35 to 49 years old and about 5-foot-9, revising an earlier estimate. Researchers believe the reuse was intended as an honor, with a re-carved lid bearing a Latin cross.
