Scottish labrador named animal of the year for detecting ‘sea vomit’

Sgiath, a Labrador from the Scottish Highlands, has been named Animal of the Year by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Originally trained as a mountain rescue dog, she now works with marine ecologist Dr Texa Sim to sniff out the invasive sea squirt Didemnum vexillum, also known as “sea vomit.” Her remarkable nose can detect it even when it is mixed in with other marine organisms, offering a fast, promising way to help monitor its spread. The award was presented at the Animal Action Awards in London on October 15, celebrating Sgiath’s new contribution to marine conservation.
