Scientists recreate the face of the oldest Homo sapiens - and it looks familiar

A team led by Brazilian 3D designer Cícero Moraes has digitally reconstructed the face of an early Homo sapiens who lived around 315,000 years ago in what is now Morocco. The fossils from Jebel Irhoud are the oldest known remains of our species, pushing its estimated origins back by about 100,000 years. Since the skull and jaw were assembled from remains belonging to different individuals, the result is a composite reconstruction, not an exact portrait. It suggests that although this early human had a long skull and a prominent jaw, his face would still look surprisingly familiar today.
