So: Shanghai has unveiled its striking Grand Opera House after a decade of construction, adding a bold cultural landmark to the Huangpu riverfront. Designed by Snøhetta with local and specialist partners, the 146,000-square-metre building brings together three auditoriums with seating for 4,200, alongside rehearsal, exhibition, learning and dining spaces. Its defining flourish is a sweeping spiral staircase that climbs from ground level to a multifunctional rooftop with viewing platforms. And here’s the thing: conceived as an open public place, the opera welcomes passers-by as well as ticket holders, while its three distinct halls are tailored to different kinds of performance.
