A 3D thermal cloak hides objects from infrared cameras

Researchers have built and tested the first three-dimensional thermal cloak, which guides heat around an object so it appears absent to an infrared camera. Unlike earlier designs, it can conceal complex shapes from heat arriving in many directions while keeping the hidden space at a stable temperature. The team made the cloak from a 3D-printed aluminum lattice combined with a heat-resistant rubber-like material. Tests successfully hid intricate shapes, pointing to exciting possibilities for protecting electronics and managing heat in microchips.
