Googly-eyed buoys and kites help protect seabirds from fishing nets

A study off Cornwall found that bird-of-prey kites lowered the odds of catching guillemots and razorbills in fishing nets by 71%, while spinning, googly-eyed buoys lowered them by 59%. Over 17 months, 10 fishers set more than 1,000 camera-monitored nets, revealing how these simple deterrents could help protect seabirds from drowning. The devices had some limitations, including sensitivity to wind and the possibility that the buoys could attract seals. Researchers say targeted use during winter, when bycatch peaks, could offer a practical way to help birds while further improvements are explored.
