Sharks could help scientists forecast hurricanes

So, scientists at the University of Delaware are tagging ocean-going sharks to gather data that could improve hurricane forecasts. As the sharks swim near the surface, their tags transmit water temperature, depth and conductivity measurements to satellites. These readings reveal warm water beneath the ocean surface, which can fuel a hurricane’s growth and is often missed by satellite scans and research vessels. The team is testing the technology now, with the aim of improving warnings and learning more about how sharks respond to severe storms.
