Scientists have pushed past a textbook rule of physics

Here’s a fascinating twist on a physics textbook rule: researchers have generated X-rays beyond the energy cutoff predicted by conventional laser theory. Working with helium atoms and powerful ultraviolet laser pulses, the TU Wien and University of California San Diego team coordinated the return of both electrons to the atom. Because the electrons’ motions are quantum-correlated, they could release energy together, enabling a single X-ray photon with higher energy than the usual one-electron process allows. The result, published in Nature Photonics, opens a fresh window on how light and matter behave at extreme energies.
