A decades-old shortest-path limit finally gives way

So, finding the shortest routes between every pair of points in a huge network is a major computing challenge, with applications from transport and communications to biology. A celebrated 1996 algorithm could estimate many distances within twice the true value, but its guarantee did not always hold for nearby points. Now, computer scientist Dr. Manoj Gupta has developed an advance that breaks through this long-standing limitation. The result could help make efficient distance estimates more dependable across a wider range of networks.
