A high school intern spotted a planet with two suns

On his third day as a NASA intern in 2019, 17-year-old Wolf Cukier noticed a strange pattern in telescope data and realized it pointed to a planet orbiting two stars. The planet, TOI 1338 b, is a giant, low-density world about 1,300 light-years away, and people sometimes call it “Wolftopia” after its young discoverer. Seven years later, scientists are still fascinated by this rare kind of planet, and the James Webb Space Telescope observed it in September 2026 to study its atmosphere. I love how one curious look at the data helped open up new questions about how planets form and where more two-sun worlds might be hiding.
