White dwarfs aren’t just white: some shine pink and green

White dwarfs, the dense remnants of stars like our sun, can shine in a surprising range of colors, including pink, purple, yellow, and green. Researchers say the colors arise when elements in their atmospheres interact with dense helium, while material from shattered asteroids can add distinctive chemical ingredients. In a study of 152 nearby white dwarfs, five showed unusual colors, including one green star enriched with rocky material from its planetary system. The discovery also hints that astronomers may have overlooked colorful stars because bright, blue-white dwarfs are easier to spot.
