SLAC scientists confirm a third type of magnetism

For nearly 90 years, magnetism was grouped into two main types: ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. Now, a team led by SLAC scientists has presented strong experimental evidence for altermagnetism, a distinct third type. Studying manganese telluride, they identified chirality - a twist in its magnetic structure that acts as a key signature. And here's the exciting part: this discovery could help inspire new memory systems, quantum devices, and more energy-efficient data centers.
