How A.I. challenged a key tenet of computer science

So, a new A.I.-related result is putting a spotlight on the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a major assumption about how difficult certain computing problems are to solve. If the challenge holds up, it could change how researchers think about the limits of algorithms and the foundations built on that assumption. That does not mean every hard problem suddenly has an easy solution, but it does make a long-standing idea worth examining closely. And here's the exciting part: A.I. is helping researchers ask fresh questions about what computers can do.
