Chinese spacecraft captures first image of Earth's mysterious mini moon

China's Tianwen-2 spacecraft has successfully beamed back its first image of Kamo'oalewa, a small near-Earth asteroid that loops around our planet like a quasi-satellite - which is why scientists affectionately call it Earth's "mini moon." The space rock, only about 66 feet in diameter, is the target of an ambitious sample-collection mission that has already traveled 621 million miles over 400 days. Now the really exciting part begins - Tianwen-2 will use one of three ingenious methods to grab samples from the asteroid's surface, including a touch-and-go technique, an anchor-and-attach approach, or a hovering robotic arm. After dropping the precious samples back to Earth in 2027, the spacecraft will continue its journey to explore comet 311P/PanSTARRS, extending this incredible mission even further.
