Did our human ancestors and Neanderthals share a common culture?

New research from a Turkish cave suggests that Neanderthals and modern humans may have shared similar cultural practices and behaviors - which is pretty fascinating when you think about it. Scientists found that both groups used comparable stone tools, employed similar hunting strategies, and most surprisingly, collected the same type of Mediterranean mollusk shells despite other options being available. This shell-collecting behavior was previously thought to be unique to modern humans, so discovering it in Neanderthals really challenges what we assumed about their cognitive abilities. The findings suggest that both species placed real value on potentially symbolic behaviors, even under harsh survival conditions, forcing us to reconsider the cultural boundaries between different human groups in that ancient world.
