How to avoid dementia - what the science really says

Scientists have identified lifestyle factors that can reduce dementia risk - things like exercise, a healthy diet, social engagement, and treating hearing loss - but here's the tricky part: doing all of these things doesn't guarantee you'll avoid the condition. Large clinical trials like FINGER and POINTER have tested intensive lifestyle interventions and found they boost cognitive performance modestly, yet none have actually reduced dementia incidence, raising questions about how much real-world impact these approaches truly have. The challenge researchers face is that while the evidence points to helpful strategies, it's incredibly difficult to measure exactly how much each factor matters in preventing dementia. There's also growing concern that we're placing too much emphasis on individual responsibility when major risk factors - like air pollution, education access, and food security - sit mostly outside people's control, making this fundamentally a societal issue rather than just a personal one.
