The Insect Summer Challenge tracked some 40,000 observations between July and August, revealing that migrant butterflies from southern Europe thrived, with the red admiral (atalanta) claiming the top spot for the first time. The bad news? The Asian hornet, which dominated last year's rankings, plummeted to 18th place - though that's actually positive for our region since this invasive species is spreading more slowly than expected. Meanwhile, wasps, ladybugs, and hoverflies all struggled with the unusual conditions, highlighting how sensitive many native insects are to changes in temperature and rainfall patterns.
