From flooded fields to thriving fish farms

Nazrul Haque grew up watching his family's paddy fields disappear under monsoon floods every year in Assam, with no income to fall back on. Instead of fighting the inevitable water, he had a brilliant idea - why not farm fish in those flooded areas instead? Starting small in 2000 with just five to seven quintals per hectare, he reinvested his earnings and secured bank loans to expand and adopt scientific methods like water quality management and organic feed. Today, he produces 60 to 70 kilograms of fish per hectare annually - more than ten times what traditional flood-season fishing yielded - and has created a sustainable livelihood model for 300 families in his fishery village.
