CRISPR crops are coming to Europe - why bolder would be better

The European Union recently overturned its strict regulations on gene-edited crops, marking a significant shift from treating all gene-edited plants as heavily regulated GMOs. This change comes at a critical moment, as climate pressures and food security concerns demand more resilient crop varieties that can handle drought, heat, and disease while using resources efficiently. I'm genuinely excited about the potential - gene editing could unlock traits instantly and save EU farmers billions in annual losses - but I worry the new rules have arbitrary limitations that might actually hold us back. The EU has created two categories (NGT-1 and NGT-2) with strict constraints on how many edits are allowed, even though nature itself doesn't impose such limits, and this could prevent farmers from growing crops with multiple improved traits. What Europe really needs now is the flexibility that countries like the US already have - focusing on whether crops are safe, rather than obsessing over exactly how they were created.
