Supersonic air and copper cables save a 300-year-old oak that witnessed the American Revolution

A historic live oak in South Carolina that survived both the Revolutionary War and a lightning strike 50 years ago is getting a high-tech rescue mission. The problem? Steel chains installed decades ago to save the tree are now slowly strangling it as the oak continues to grow and the metal cuts into its bark. Arborists are using supersonic air technology to loosen the compacted soil around the roots and adding nutrient-rich kelp to revive the tree's health. They're also installing lightning rods with copper cables to prevent future strikes, and will replace the old choking chains with flexible reinforcement cables that allow the tree to move naturally in the wind.
