One man's quest to end female genital mutilation in Mali

Sidi Haidara used to believe that female genital mutilation was simply part of Mali's cultural traditions - but after participating in UN Women training sessions supported by Germany, his perspective completely shifted. Now he walks from village to village with a powerful new message: no tradition should ever come at the expense of a girl's health, rights, or future. Rather than imposing change from the outside, Haidara organizes community dialogues with families, religious leaders, and young people, encouraging conversations that challenge long-held beliefs. His work is showing real results - more parents are asking questions, families are abandoning the practice, and discussions about protecting girls have become increasingly open across Mali's Mopti and Gao regions.
