A brand new cat species discovered in Bolivia - first time in over a century

Scientists have confirmed the discovery of an entirely new cat species in Bolivia's misty Yungas region, calling it Tilcayo - the first such discovery in over 100 years. The tiny wildcat, weighing just 1.4 kg, was identified through genetic analysis after researchers studied DNA from 38 cats across South America and realized what were thought to be one unified species actually comprise five distinct species. What's fascinating is that this evolutionary line separated from its closest relatives about 1.4 million years ago, yet the animal had gone completely unrecognized by science until now. The discovery matters because these cats are threatened by deforestation and mining in their habitat, so understanding them as separate species helps conservationists protect them more effectively.
