Japan tests mobile robotic rubbish bins at Shinjuku Station

So here's what's happening - three automated robotic bins are being trialled at Tokyo's Shinjuku Station, one of the world's busiest rail hubs where over 2.7 million passengers pass through daily. These clever little machines stand just over a metre tall and move at a careful 20 centimetres per second, navigating pre-programmed routes between ticket gates to collect general waste and plastic bottles. The trial runs until November on weekdays, and the robots are designed to help human workers rather than replace them - East Japan Railway is carefully studying how commuters interact with them and whether they can safely navigate the crowded underground spaces. What's charming is that tourists have been drawn to the machines' personality - they've got large googly eyes and livery featuring the station's mascot, Shinjukuma, which gives them real character.
