165-mile bike trail through Minnesota finally completed after 30 years

After three decades of planning, building, and fundraising, Minnesota has completed one of America's longest paved cycling trails - a stunning 165-mile route that winds through historic mining country from the Mississippi River to the Boundary Waters. The Mesabi Trail connects 28 communities and takes you through some truly beautiful terrain, with hills and forests that actually grew back on old mine heaps, plus fascinating historic buildings and mining artifacts along the way. What's really cool is how this wasn't the work of just one organization - it took genuine partnership and persistence from dozens of groups, with the state's unique Department of Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation helping lead the charge. Now tens of thousands of people are already using it every year for cycling, hiking, inline skating in summer, or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when winter rolls around.
