The world’s loudest birds squawk as loud as a jackhammer

I find it fascinating that the bare-throated bellbird and red-legged seriema are now contenders for the loudest bird title, reaching volumes over 120 decibels—louder than a jackhammer! Using golf rangefinders, researchers measured calls from 123 species, most never studied before. Bigger birds with wider beaks tend to be louder, which makes sense if you think about how trumpets amplify sound. Yet, the real mystery remains why evolution favors such loud calls, as the expected ecological reasons didn’t fully match the data.
