This giant stick insect fooled scientists for decades

Here’s a delightful reminder that nature still has surprises up its sleeve: a University of Sydney team has uncovered two previously unrecognized Australian stick insect species and brought a third back into scientific recognition. What scientists had classified as two species turns out to be five, living from northern New South Wales up the Queensland coast and into tropical northern Australia. By combining DNA analysis with museum specimens, field surveys, citizen science records and captive-raised insects, the researchers untangled the insects’ identities. One of the newly recognized species even lays eggs with a distinctive lidlike structure, and the discovery shows how much biodiversity may still be hiding in plain sight.
