At 17, this student is helping children understand cancer through a Pokémon-inspired card game

After seeing cancer affect both his grandparents, Daniel Zhang wanted to help children make sense of the disease and its treatments. So, at 17, he and his classmate Zachary Tou created Tumor Tactics, a card game inspired by Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! that lets players explore treatment choices, side effects, and how tumors can change. The pair now run a student-led nonprofit and lead workshops in San Diego schools, where students from kindergarten through eighth grade can learn together. And here's the thing: they’ve made scientific accuracy part of the fun, helping young players think about why different cancers may call for different treatments.
