New crocodile species found in the rocks of Egypt’s great sphinx

So, the rocks beneath Egypt’s Great Sphinx have helped reveal a new extinct crocodile species, Herugavialis cairensis. Its fossil skull was found in rocks around 45 million years old and recovered nearly a century ago, but modern techniques helped researchers recognize it as a distinct species. And here's the curious coincidence: the crocodile is missing the tip of its snout, so the researchers named it after the Egyptian god Heru, possibly an inspiration for the Sphinx. The discovery adds to evidence that ancient gavial crocodiles once thrived around the Mediterranean, before the region dried out about six million years ago.
