Southern right whales return to South Africa, drawing crowds to the coast

So, southern right whales are back in Walker Bay near Hermanus, and their arrival is drawing visitors to the cliffs and the annual whale festival. From shore and boats, people are watching mothers with newborn calves swimming close to the coast. Each year, the whales travel from Antarctica to South Africa’s warmer waters between June and November to give birth and raise their young. And here's the thing: a whale crier sounds a kelp horn along Hermanus’s 12-kilometre cliff path when one is spotted, while decades of protection have helped this once heavily hunted species return.
