A golden tree coral gets a family of its own

Researchers exploring Costa Rica’s underwater mountains have discovered a bright yellow, tree-shaped coral unlike any known coral family. Found 360 to 529 meters below the surface, it appeared among fields of brittle stars, inspiring its name Laurinque elenya, meaning “golden tree” and “of the stars” in Tolkien’s Quenya. By comparing hundreds of genes, scientists confirmed that the coral represents a distinct evolutionary lineage and created the new family Laurinqueidae. This discovery adds to the remarkable diversity found on Costa Rica’s seamounts and shows how much of the deep ocean is still waiting to be explored.
