So, here’s a striking difference: human brains tend to lose weight from around age 45 to 50, even without disease. An analysis of brain data from 601 great apes suggests that this decline may not happen in our closest living relatives. The research includes chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos, whose brains appear to maintain their mass into later life. Their relatively shorter lifespans could help explain this pattern, though the finding offers a fascinating new perspective on how ageing affects the brain.
