Meet the otter-like mammal that swam among dinosaurs

Around 165 million years ago, Megacauda sungei swam through lakes and rivers in what is now China, hunting fish and salamanders. At about 50 centimetres long, this remarkable mammal had a beaver-like flat tail, otter-like hunting skills and teeth suited to gripping slippery prey. Exceptionally well-preserved fossils even show impressions of its fur and skin, helping researchers piece together what it looked like and how it lived. And here's the thing: studying Megacauda is also giving scientists fresh clues about the early evolution of mammals and how they chewed their food.
