Winnipeg-tagged monarch reaches Mexico on its migration

What a remarkable journey: a monarch tagged by Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park Zoo has reached Mexico after travelling about 2,300 kilometres in 40 days. The tiny solar-powered tag is part of a tracking project run with Environment and Climate Change Canada; the zoo tagged 29 butterflies, while more than 1,300 have been tagged across North America this fall. The butterfly is among just three tagged monarchs detected in Mexico so far this season and still has about 800 kilometres to go to its wintering site. Researchers hope the data will reveal migration bottlenecks and help direct conservation work where it can make the biggest difference.
