Scientists uncover 539 hidden chemical zones in the brain

Researchers at EPFL have created a detailed 3D map of lipids across the mouse brain, revealing 539 distinct chemical zones called lipizones. Using mass spectrometry imaging, they analyzed 172 lipids in 109 brain slices and combined around seven million measurements with machine learning. Some zones align with familiar brain structures, while others reveal hidden chemical boundaries and links between distant areas. And here's the thing: this lipid map can show aspects of brain organization that anatomy and gene activity alone may miss.
