Cat-like whiskers help tiny drones fly in the dark

After disasters, tiny drones can squeeze into rubble to search for survivors, but smoke and darkness can leave their cameras and lidar useless. Now, researchers at Delft University of Technology have given a palm-sized drone lightweight, whisker-like wires that sense nearby obstacles through touch. An onboard microcontroller uses pressure sensors to interpret the wires’ bending, while a correction algorithm eliminated false detections in the reported tests. And here's the exciting part: the drone could follow a wall while keeping a small, steady distance from it, pointing to a new way for rescue drones to navigate when they cannot see.
