Researchers have rewarmed pig kidneys cooled to -150 °C, including one stored for more than a year, and found that the organs regained their color and produced urine after testing and transplantation. Their technique uses iron oxide nanoparticles and an electromagnetic field to warm the kidneys evenly from within. Now, the kidneys are not yet perfect, and the preprint study has not been peer-reviewed or shown that the organs can sustain life long term. Still, this is a remarkable step toward organ banking that could one day give doctors and patients much more time.
