Light gives scientists a new way to study the brain

I love how a tiny light-sensing protein from a single-celled alga led to a powerful way to study the brain. Nobel laureates Peter Hegemann, Georg Nagel and Karl Deisseroth showed how channelrhodopsin can make nerve cells respond to light. With optogenetics, researchers can switch selected brain cells on or off and observe what changes. This precise technique is helping scientists investigate how brain cells contribute to memory, sleep, sensation and movement.
