NASA solves a strange mystery inside Bennu’s boulders

When NASA’s OSIRIS-REx reached Bennu, it found a rugged world covered in boulders, even though earlier observations suggested the asteroid’s surface should heat and cool quickly. Researchers studying returned samples found that Bennu’s rocks are highly porous and riddled with cracks, features that help explain how the asteroid can lose heat so rapidly. Laboratory measurements initially showed higher thermal inertia than the spacecraft had observed, pointing to the importance of the boulders’ size and internal structure. So, by examining the rocks at different scales, scientists are getting closer to understanding Bennu’s surprising surface.
