Scientists uncover a surprising secret behind the brain’s wrinkles

So: common marmosets have brains that stay remarkably smooth, and scientists have now found some of the cellular reasons why. Using miniature brain organoids, researchers compared human and marmoset neural progenitor cells, which produce neurons as the brain develops. In marmosets, some of these cells divide more slowly, have simpler structures, or develop at different times, together resulting in fewer neurons and less folding. Published in Science Advances, the findings offer fresh clues about primate brain evolution and may eventually help researchers understand disorders of human brain development.
