Exercise may reshape the nerves that guide the heart

So, exercise may do more than strengthen the heart - it could also reshape the nerves that help control it. In a study led by the University of Bristol, rats that completed 10 weeks of moderate aerobic exercise showed striking differences between the nerve clusters on the body's two sides. The right cluster had roughly four times as many neurons as the left, while left-side nerve cells grew nearly twice as large and right-side cells became slightly smaller. It's an exciting new clue about how activity affects the heart's nervous system, though researchers still need to find out whether the same changes happen in people.
