Can AI speak dolphin?

So, here's an exciting new way AI could help us understand dolphins: after decades of research, Denise Herzing’s team is using it to find patterns in recordings of their clicks and whistles. Working with scientists at Georgia Tech and Google DeepMind, the researchers are giving dolphin communication structure, though they haven’t translated it yet. They’ve even tested an underwater computer that plays dolphin sounds, but figuring out whether an animal understands a sound or is simply mimicking it remains a challenge. A real conversation is still a long way off, and exploring what dolphin signals mean in their culture could deepen our understanding of both these animals and our relationship with the ocean.
